Getting close to the action is where I like to be. We’re at the last train station from Brisbane airport witch saves a lot of hassles. I am strategically positioned 25min from Beechmont launch and 30min from Tamborine. These are the two launches open for visitors. I am also 15min from the beach and in the good season enjoy going for a surf or a swim every morning before flying. I preffer to be here then at Canungra were the flying is, simply because if your not flying theres not that much else to do. The mountains are clearly visible from the beach and I can assess the day from there. You can see the direction of the clouds and their heights etc. There is also a marvelous harmony between the ocean and the sky I have found through experience that if the surf is good the flying is great and if the surf is chaotic so is the sky. One of our worst wind directions is North it usually pushes the thermals along both ridges instead of intersecting them across the ridge. If you’ve had a look at the launches on GOOGLE EARTH you’ll see that drifting to the south puts you in difficult terrain. Northerlys also mean hot dry blue sky with a stong inversion. It tends to flatten out the waves and makes for an ideal time to go snorkeling or wind surfing. The water tends to be quite clear as it hasn’t rained for a few days and the high pressure that produces the Northerly's calms the water. You can fly these days but sometimes it’s more fun enjoying yourself at the beach. |

Accommodation $45 per night includes continental breakfast and a vehicle is available to go flying with. We are looking to purchase a larger premises with separate accommodation but these things take time and money. So as it is we have three bedrooms available all with double bed. The toilet and shower is separate and I have a computer for the visitors and extra Broadband connection if you have your own laptop. There is a park at the end of the street with a few kilometers of running or walking tracks for those that enjoy a morning walk or run etc.
BBQ I have a barbeque in the back yard for big cook ups after flying or fishing etc. Nothing better then a good feed and some drinks after a Personal Best flight. The weather is quite moderate all year round and we live outside in the fresh air as much as possible.
2 DOGS I also have 2 dogs that get a little spoilt but are great with kids and visitors except for the black one he gets a little excited at times. They get friendly with anyone who pats them and are happy to go for a walk or run. They are Figaro (black) and Bella (brown).
VEHICLE When your Hang gliding in another country the biggest single challeng is getting your glider to launch and then home again. You can hire a car from the rental guys or buy your own vehicle. The next thing is to orginise racks or as I have seen before pillows to strap your glider straight onto the roof. It works and you can get away with some wild rigs but if you want to fly and your glider hits the bitumen then it could take a few days to repair. If its not Moyes or Airborne the it could be even longer depending on the brand. I have purchased a vehicle and fitted it with good quality racking to transport your glider and gear to the hill. It can carry up to 5 gliders so is also good for a retrieve vehicle. This vehicle is made available at no extra charge to all pilots who stay but they must be competent, responsible and have recognized drivers liscence. My aim is to maintain the vehicle in good working order and allow it’s use to travel the local sites only. If you are staying for a while and wish to travel I can help you purchase a vehicle and help on sell it for you when you are heading home. I have sound mechanical experience and assist in buying vehicles for friends and family.
BIKES I also have two bike available for pilots who wish to go for a ride the little one can be ridden with a car license the bigger one requires a bike license. These are both available no charge to visiting pilots again you must be competent and responsible. I enjoy riding there are some great roads up through forests etc on the way to launch. |
